MUST-HAVES: Grunge/Punk style pieces you need in your closet!

  • "Grunge" and "Punk". Both words seem to carry certain connotations with them: Dark clothing, colored hair, sticking your tongue out and posing with the 'sign of the horns' hand gesture. After they made their debut in the 70's/80's in the alternative/rock music scene, it was only till the early 90's that these words became meaningful in the fashion world.

There are certainly plenty of Grunge/punk style characteristics that have made way into mainstream fashion, and they've certainly become a beloved trend in the fashion world. DISCLAIMER: it's okay if you don't listen to grunge, punk, rock, etc. Besides, somebody who devotes themself to the classical music genre has probably still been a victim of the 'flannel-tied-around-the-waist" trend (which is inspired from grunge).

That being said, there are plenty of grungy and punk-y style pieces that you could add to your everyday wardrobe that can definitely add more character to a bland outfit. In this article, I'll show my top 5. (Note: all sources and captions for each photo are listed under the photo)

    1. CHOKER NECKLACES

Choker necklaces may be one of my favorite accessories in general. I've definitely seen it around, but I don't think it gets the credit it's worth. I also believe that they tend to slim down the neck which is always a good thing in my opinion!

    Here are some examples:

This is just a plain and simple black band around the neck. However, it spices up the look a little more, and give the outfit more depth.

Another very common choker necklace is the black "tattoo" choker necklace as seen in the picture above. It can be worn alone, however if it paired with other necklaces, you can really amp up your outfit and overall style.

    2. THE BLACK COMBAT BOOTS

What's so great about these is that you can wear them with skinny jeans, tights, leggings, dresses/skirts, etc. Just wear them with the right color combinations and pulling them off will be no difficult task.

Pair them with a pair of black leggings or black skinny jeans.

    3. KNEE_HIGH SOCKS

Knee-high socks are definitely something that needs to appear more in street style. They're not only cute, but they can also add warmth to your outfit if the weather's a little chilly or you think your bland outfit needs more pieces to make it more interesting.

Plaid skirts can add some pattern to an outfit and be worn with all the pieces mentioned in this article so far.

It can also be worn with various knit tops, just make sure you're not color or pattern-blocking too hard.

    5. ROUND SUNGLASSES

These sunglasses are definitely something worth investing in. You'll not only look cool, you'll also be able to channel some of your inner Ozzy Osbourne.

Although these glasses do not exactly belong to grunge (definitely not a punk style), they definitely have had their spotlight in the grunge and punk world as they're paired with a lot of grunge-esque outfits.

These grunge/punk style MUST-HAVE pieces can be incorporated into any wardrobe and can add more variety to your personal style. They don't even have to be worn all together, and mix-and-matching can definitely be practiced with these 5 items!
