Back to school: 11 hot fall fashion trends

  • Back-to-school fashions are heading back in time this fall, with styles from the ’70s and ‘90s discovering renewed popularity.

So, if mom and grandma are hoarders, there may be a few items in the back of their closets worth dusting off and updating for 2015.

The revival of the ’70s that’s been popular this year continues into the fall. Think that groovy, boho chic look, including everything from fringe to flares to maxi dresses.

In a blast from the slightly more recent past, the ’90s are back in fashion, too, from jelly sandals to crop tops.

If you want to look cool when you head back to school, here are some must-haves for your wardrobe:

    1. SUEDE
A nod to the ‘70s, you’ll find it in clothing and accessories, like handbags. Don’t forget the fringe.

    2. DENIM
It’s everywhere, from shift dresses to high-waisted skirts to light denim shirts paired with dark jeans.

Speaking of denim, the acid-washed, distressed look of the ’90s is back in style, too

    4. BOOTS
Think high styles, either at the knee or over the knee, with boot socks peeking out the top.

    5. FLANNEL
Another throwback to the ’90s, flannel shirts in colorful plaids are a comfortable and versatile fashion trend for fall. Wear them tucked in with jeans or a skirt, dress them up with accessories, layer under a sweater or vest, or wear a larger size over a T-shirt or leggings.

    6. FLARES
Look out, skinny jeans. In another nod to the disco era, flares are back.

All fashion isn’t going the way of the bell bottom. Joggers, those fitted, sweatpant-like bottoms for men and women, are still in style this fall. Not just for exercise, they come in a variety of fabrics and patterns.

A more form-fitting version of the denim classic is finding its way back out of the closet.

Worn with tights or over-the-knee socks, they’re a fun way to look a little more dressy.

When it comes to completing your look, you have lots of options. Another throwback from the ’90s, choker necklaces are in fashion this season. So are statement necklaces. Or, for a softer look, try layering several more delicate necklaces of varying lengths.

    11. OXBLOOD
It’s not a fashion piece, but it is a hot fashion color. Much like Marsala, Pantone’s 2015 Color of the Year, oxblood is a deep reddish brown that lends it self perfectly to fall. It can be found in jackets, tops, pants, handbags, shoes and even makeup.
